We're down to the final week and a half of the MLB season and Milwaukee's playoff chances have improved, albeit slightly, since this time last week.
The Brewers gained one game on the Philadelphia Phillies for the final wild-card spot, although the San Diego Padres extended their lead by a game.
Here's how things shape up with the regular season set to conclude Oct. 5. As a reminder, if teams are tied in the standings there won't be any extra game(s) played but it will go to a tiebreaker. Since Philadelphia won the season series over Milwaukee 4-2, the Phillies would advance if the two teams are tied for that third wild-card spot. It's an added dynamic which is not in the Brewers' favor, obviously.
Here’s a look at this week’s games for the NL wild-card contenders:
SAN DIEGO (0 home, 0 away)
Remaining games: vs. L.A. Dodgers (Sept. 27-29), vs. Chicago White Sox (Sept. 30-Oct. 2), vs. San Francisco Giants (Oct. 3-5).
Skinny: San Diego has won seven of its last 10 games. … We mentioned the tiebreaker with the Phillies for Milwaukee. Well, the Padres also won the season series over the Brewers, 4-3. … San Diego is 4-12 against the Dodgers this season. … The White Sox and Giants are all but eliminated from postseason play. … San Diego is 11-5 vs. San Francisco in 2022. … The Padres have the same winning percentage at home as on the road (.556). … The Padres will have to face Chicago ace Dylan Cease.
PHILADELPHIA (0 home, 10 away)
Remaining games: at Chicago Cubs (Sept. 27-29), at Washington Nationals (Sept. 30-Oct. 2), at Houston Astros (Oct. 3-5)
Skinny: The Phillies have a winning record on the road – barely – at 36-35 (.507). … Philadelphia is 0-3 against the Cubs this season but holds a 13-2 edge over Washington. … The Phillies are 3-7 over their last 10 games and 10-11 in September. … The Phillies and Nationals play a doubleheader Oct. 1. … Unfortunately for Milwaukee, Houston will likely have clinched the best record in the American League by the final series. How the Astros play things out, and who they pitch, will be interesting to note.
MILWAUKEE (9 home, 0 away)
Remaining games: vs. St. Louis (Sept. 27-28), vs. Miami (Sept. 29-Oct. 2), vs. Diamondbacks (Oct. 2-5)
Skinny: Miles Mikolas, St. Louis’ starter Tuesday, has a 4.29 ERA on the road in 17 starts. … The Brewers will face the Cardinals’ Jose Quintana on Wednesday. In 20 career games against Milwaukee, Quintana is 9-4 with a 2.95 ERA. … Miami’s Sandy Alcantara (14-8, 2.32) is scheduled to face the Brewers on Sept. 30. … Miami is 31-44 (.413) on the road and playing for a manager who won’t be back in 2023. … The Diamondbacks did win three of four against Milwaukee in Arizona recently but are 31-42 (.425) away from home. … It’s currently set up where the Brewers might miss Merrill Kelly (13-7, 3.13) but could face Zac Gallen (12-3, 2.46) in a potential pivotal season finale.
