Last month we told you it was not only time to start appreciating Minnesota’s Karl-Anthony Towns as a scorer but also that he might be the game’s best shooting big man.

Well, Towns keeps proving those points.

In Sunday’s win over Houston, Towns sank 15 of 25 shots (60.0%), which included making 4 of 6 from behind the arc, in tallying 40 points to go with nine rebounds and seven assists.

It marked the 10th 40+-point game of Towns’ career and first this season.

No other player has more 40-point games in Timberwolves history. Kevin Love also had 10 from 2011-14. Andrew Wiggins is next with eight while Kevin Garnett posted four. Anthony Edwards already has three in his young career. Only Al Jefferson and Isaiah Rider have more than one 40-point game with Minnesota; they both had two apiece.

Towns’ first 40-point game came in his second season when he notched 47 against New York on Nov. 30, 2016. A couple of weeks later, Dec. 17, he went for 41 against the Rockets.

He had one in each of the next two seasons – 40 at the Lakes on April 4, 2017 and 56 vs. Atlanta on March 28, 2018.

In a two-week stretch in 2019, from Feb. 28-March 9, Towns eclipsed 40 points three times. He hit 40 at Chicago on Jan. 1, 2022 and 41 at Phoenix on March 18, 2021.

In that latter game he had eight assists – the only time he had more dimes than in a 40-point game than Saturday’s contest.

Having 40 points with that many assists and rebounds is not common. Including Towns, it’s been done just five times this season. Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo has done it twice (including in a loss to the Timberwolves on Oct. 27) along with Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid and New York’s Kemba Walker.

Only Towns, Embiid and Antetokounmpo (once) also added a steal. And only Walker, with seven, had more 3-pointers (7) in such a game this season.

That game marked the seventh time in 33 games this season in which Towns made 4+ 3-pointers. Last season he had 13 such games (while appearing in 50 contests), which is the most of his career. In 2019-20, in 35 games, he had 12. Towns has already matched his third-highest total, which was done in 2018-19 (but in 77 games).

In other words, in his last 118 games, Towns has 32 games with 4+ 3-pointers. That’s 27.1% of the time.

Underappreciated? Best shooting big man?

Your honor, the defense rests. Towns, however, is still going strong.
