The Minnesota recalled St. Paul native Louie Varland from Triple-A on Friday as the Twins prepare to open a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels at Target Field.

The right-handed Varland is expected to start Friday night for Minnesota. He'll be opposed on the mound by the Angels' Shohei Ohtani.

To make room for Varland on the active roster, right-hander Aaron Sanchez was designated for assignment.

Varland, a 15th-round pick in 2019, has made two starts for the Twins this season. He made his major-league debut Sept. 7 at New York, allowing two runs in 5 1/3 innings on three hits and one walk while striking out seven Yankees. His next start came Sept. 17 in Cleveland, going five innings and giving up four runs on nine hits.

This will be Varland's first appearance at Target Field.

Sanchez made seven appearances for the Twins with three starts. In 27 innings he recorded a 4.00 ERA, 1.296 WHIP and 8.3 K/9.
