Minnesota's Tyler Nubin celebrates after beating Michigan State on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2022, at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing.

Minnesota’s defense this year has been a team effort.

Well, at least according to the Big Ten media and coaches.

The Gophers are tied for fourth in the nation in scoring defense (13.3 points per game) and sixth in total defense (279.5 yards per game) but had no players named to the All-Big Ten first-team defensive team.

Safety Tyler Nubin was the only player on the second team, a consensus selection.

The senior played in 11 games this season, missing the season finale against Wisconsin, and recorded 56 tackles, four interceptions, three passes broken up, two tackles for loss and a forced fumble. Nubin led Minnesota in picks and was second in tackles per game (5.09).

Linebacker Mariano-Sori Marin was tabbed a third teamer by the coaches and an honorable mention selection by the media. Sori-Marin led Minnesota in tackles (78) and tied for the team lead in TFL (4.5) while also producing three PBU and a sack.

Linebacker Cody Lindenberg and kicker Matthew Trickett were consensus honorable mention selections.

Gophers who were named honorable mention by the coaches were defensive linemen Trill Carter and Danny Stiggow and kick and punt returner Quentin Redding.

Media selections besides Sori-Marin were defensive linemen Kyler Baugh and Tyler Rush and cornerbacks Jordan Howden and Terrell Smith.

The All-Big Ten offensive teams will be announced Wednesday.
