Minnesota is back home to finish off its nonconference season against another Mid-American Conference opponent in Bowling Green.
The Gophers earlier this season squeaked past the MAC’s Miami (Ohio) 31-26. Minnesota was an 18 1/2-point favorite in that game. In this one, the Gophers are favored by 31.
For what it’s worth, Bowling Green lost at Tennessee 38-6 in its season opener. The Falcons were a 37 1/2-point underdog in that one.
So, you might have a good idea how people think this game will go. But what are the projected scores, you ask? Read on!
Here’s this week’s predictions from around the web:
Pete Fiutak of Collegefootballnews.com: Minnesota 44, Bowling Green 10. "Bowling Green has the nation’s second-worst running game. It’s not going to start working this week. Minnesota has yet to lose a non-conference game under PJ Fleck, and it’s not going to start now.”
Sam McKewon of the Omaha World-Leader: Minnesota 35, Bowling Green 7. “The Gophers have won an incredible 21 straight nonconference games. Yes, a bunch were against lousy teams like Bowling Green. You got a problem with that? Minnesota doesn’t.”
Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller: Minnesota 56, Bowling Green 14. “Not much is expected from either of those Power Five programs in 2021, but that didn't stop them both from giving a College Football Playoff contender a run for its money. Minnesota led Ohio State deep into the third quarter, and Colorado led Texas A&M until late in the fourth quarter. Neither one was able to pull off the upset, but the winner of this game will be deemed a team to watch out for moving forward. And I like Minnesota to pull off a slight upset on the road, with running back Treyson Potts looking like an adequate replacement for the injured Mohamed Ibrahim.”
Saturday Tradition’s Ryan O’Gara: Minnesota 35, Bowling Green 10. “The Golden Gophers already struggled to get by one MAC program, but Bowling Green is not near as good as Miami (OH). I think Minnesota will have an easier time with this one. But can Trey Potts get a rest? He has averaged 30 carries the last 2 weeks (and played very well), but this is a long season and there are more important games looming, starting the following week with Purdue.”
Steve Helwick of SB Nation’s Hustle Belt: Minnesota 41, Bowling Green 6. “Bowling Green is on the rise, and the Falcons might cause some upset scares in MAC play, but asking them to take down Minnesota feels too hefty of an ask at the moment. Through three games, this Falcons team looks like a noticeable upgrade over the last two years of the Scot Loeffler era, and they already accomplished one of their primary 2021 goals of snapping that daunting losing streak. But Trey Potts should be ready for another 100-yard rushing game. Minnesota’s offensive line will possess a clear upper-edge in the trenches and the Golden Gophers’ relentless defense from last week should make a return. This one will be over by halftime, and P.J. Fleck rows the boat to his second MAC win of the year.”
Mark Hasty of Go Iowa Awesome: Minnesota 41, Bowling Green 14. “BGSU is terrible, and it’s not even the worst team in Ohio. The Gophers should make short work of the Falcons, which is the opposite of what happens in nature.”
Joe DiTullio of GameHaus: Minnesota.
Bill Connelly of ESPN: His S&P+ projection has it Minnesota 42, Bowling Green 11.
All three Athlon Sports analysts pick Minnesota to win.
