The Chicago Bears selected Minnesota Gophers cornerback Terell Smith with the 165th overall pick in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL draft Saturday.
Smith started nine games as a freshman but was a reserve the next two seasons before becoming a starter again in 2021 and ’22.
Last year, Smith had 38 tackles, seven passes defensed, 4.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, two interceptions and a forced fumble. In 48 games with the Gophers, Smith recorded 109 tackles, 20 PD, 6.5 TFL, two sacks, four picks and a forced fumble.
Smith had a solid NFL combine, running a 4.41 in the 40-yard dash with a 34-inch vertical leap and 10-foot broad jump.
Now Smith looks to parlay that into a spot on the Chicago defense, which has cornerbacks Jaylon Johnson, Kyler Gordon and 2023 second-rounder Tyrique Stevenson, among others.
