The Cardinals purchased the contract of catcher Austin Romine from Triple-A Memphis on Monday, the team announced.

In a corresponding move, St. Louis optioned catcher Iván Herrera to Memphis.

Romine, 33, has hit .238 across 11 major league seasons. The right-handed hitter appeared in only three games for the Angels in 2022, and inked a minor league deal with the Cardinals in mid-June. He spent 2021 with the Chicago Cubs and 2020 with the Detroit Tigers, after eight seasons with the New York Yankees. Romine should provide a veteran presence at backstop, with Yadier Molina sidelined due to knee soreness.

Romine was a teammate of Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado at El Toro High School in Lake Forest, California.

The Cardinals said Romine would be available for Monday's game in Atlanta and would wear No. 35.

Herrera appeared in 11 games, including six starts, and hit .111 for the Cardinals. The 22-year-old rookie catcher collected one RBI and two walks.

Additionally, the team announced outfielder Tyler O'Neill would began his rehab assignment with Memphis on Monday. The Cardinals placed O'Neill on the 10-day injured list on June 20 with a left hamstring strain. O'Neill has hit .241 with four home runs across 45 games for St. Louis in 2022.
