When the Las Vegas Aces hired Becky Hammon, the move was meant to make a splash. She’s the highest paid coach in WNBA history and had spent years coaching in the NBA under the Spurs' Gregg Popovich. In her one season in Vegas, she led the Aces to the best record in the league and the WNBA Finals, and won Coach of the Year honors.
She’s also making a splash on the sideline, wearing a new model of coaching uniform. WNBA rules stipulate if coaches aren’t going to wear business dress, they need to wear matching, team-branded outfits. Hammon found a way to straddle the two, with her staff wearing blazers with zip-up hoodies underneath.

WNBA fans have noticed the look, which breaks from the polo or quarter zips many coaching staff wear. She’s even been dubbed “Hoodie Hammon” by WNBA Twitter. What led to the unique look?
“I just like hoodies. It was just kind of my call. I don't want to wear the traditional quarter zip. I definitely don't want to wear a polo. So that was the next best thing,” Hammon said.
Her players like the look but worry that wearing a hoodie and a blazer in Las Vegas in the summer, where temperatures regularly break 100, just might be a bit warm. Even with air conditioning at Michelob Ultra Arena, it’s a lot.
“I was just like, ‘I know they're hot as hell in the desert with a hoodie on and a blazer,' " Aces star A'ja Wilson said with a laugh. “Yeah. It's dope. I'm like, how are y'all wearing all these clothes?”
The truth is, Hammon is hot.
“No, I'm hot. I'm sweating. I'm sweating. So half the time I pull my hair up cause I'm like, ‘Oh, I can't take it,' ” she said.
Hammon has taken the hoodie look with her on the way to the WNBA Finals, which start Sunday at 3 p.m. ET.
