Each week, the Noise highlights under-started names who he believes are destined to torch the competition. To qualify, each player must be started in fewer than 60% of Yahoo leagues. Speaking as an accountability advocate, I will post results, whether genius or moronic, the following week. Scoring thresholds in .5 PPR format are — QB: 18 fantasy points, RB: 12 fantasy points (10 for shockers), WR: 11 fantasy points, TE: 10 fantasy points.

Lambasted repeatedly last season with the Colts (his Week 17 failings against the Jaguars being the final straw), Wentz silenced his harshest critics against the same team he last bombed against. He completed 65.9% of his attempts for 313 yards and four touchdowns. Yes, he tossed a pair of interceptions, but, for the most part, the Commanders QB was efficient and effective, connecting with seven different receivers. Most importantly, rookie Jahan Dotson caught two TDs, an excellent sign that No. 1 wideout Terry McLaurin may not have to shoulder a massive burden. For Wentz, it was definitely shades of his most productive days in Philly.

Chasers of last week’s success won’t be swindled. Detroit, which allowed 455 total yards, 38 points and 7.6 yards per attempt to Jalen Hurts and the Eagles, isn’t exactly a ferocious pride of Lions. Going a step further, all three of their primary cornerbacks — Jeff Okudah, Mike Hughes and Amani Oruwariye — were collectively targeted 13 times and conceded 10 receptions (76.9 catch percentage). In a battle with a 48.5 projected total at several sportsbooks, points — especially of the vertical variety — should be plentiful.

Yes, stretching back to last year, Wentz has only twice in his last nine games generated starter-worthy numbers. However, the Lions, if Week 1 is any indication, have turnstile tendencies. Expect kneecaps to remain bite-free, including Wentz’s.

Fearless Forecast: 263 passing yards, 2 passing touchdowns, 0 interceptions, 15 rushing yards, 20.0 fantasy points

Week 2 Bonus Flame

For Dak Prescott backers already in "we’re out of beer" panic mode, Mariota is a quality replacement. Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson and Hurts deservedly earned all the headlines as the ultimate dual-threat QBs, but the former Oregon Duck possesses plenty of multidimensional flap. He cracked the top 12 in fantasy output among Week 1 passers simply because of his active quads. Against a supposedly stalwart Saints D, he amassed 215 passing yards, 72 rushing yards and a rushing TD.

The defending Super Bowl champion Rams were woefully humbled by the Bills in their season opener. Troy Hill was decent in coverage, but David Long (118.8 passer rating allowed) and Jalen Ramsey (158.3) were repeatedly skewered. In what could be a fairly high-scoring contest, Mariota churns the legs enough to warrant starter consideration even in 12-team formats.

Fearless Forecast: 231 passing yards, 1 passing touchdown, 59 rushing yards, 0 rushing touchdowns, 19.4 fantasy points

Last week: 1-1

  • Trey Lance, 11.9 fantasy points
  • Kirk Cousins, 19.1 fantasy points
