Yadier Molina is back and Jordan Hicks is on the injured list -- and that's just two of the six roster moves the St. Louis Cardinals made Thursday before their game with the Milwaukee Brewers.
Molina had been on the bereavement list. He returns in time to catch Adam Wainwright's start -- their 313th start together as a battery, third best in major league history.
Hicks, who has been struggling in his attempt to maintain a spot in the St. Louis rotation, is out with a right forearm flexor. The 25-year-old right-hander is 1-4 with a 5.02 ERA in nine games (seven starts) this season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2019, sitting out the 2020 season and pitching only 10 innings in 2021.
The other moves Thursday:
• Optioned right-hander Junior Fernández and catcher Iván Herrera to Triple-A Memphis. Herrera made his major league debut while Molina was on the bereavement list.
• Recalled right-handers Jake Woodford and Kodi Whitley from the Redbirds.
Woodford, a potential candidate for starting duty with Hicks hurt, is 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA in seven games for the Cardinals this season. Whitley is 2-0 with a 4.50 ERA in 11 games.
Coverage of the Cardinals-Brewers game and the Waino-Yadi start begins at 6 p.m. on Bally Sports Midwest.
