The St. Louis Cardinals added some outfield depth prior to the finale of their three-game series with the Giants on Wednesday, recalling outfielder Lars Nootbaar and placing right-hander Carlos Martínez on the 10-day injured list with a right thumb ligament sprain.

Nootbaar, who was optioned to Memphis on July 1 after a nine-game stint with the Cardinals, returns after playing in three games for the Redbirds. He's been with the major league club as part of the taxi squad during their current road trip, and now he provides manager Mike Shildt with some extra outfield depth as primary left fielder Tyler O'Neill works his way back from a finger injury and an allergic reaction to food that caused him to miss Tuesday night's game.

Nootbaar, 23, had a .160 batting average with a .454 OPS and three RBIs during his previous stint with the Cardinals.

Martínez, who exited Sunday's start against the Rockies after 3.1 innings due to the thumb injury, heads back to the injured list after missing time in May due to a right ankle injury. He has a 6.23 ERA with 57 strikeouts and 36 walks in 82.1 innings this season.

Martínez was scheduled to start Friday against the Cubs, but the Cardinals will instead start Wade LeBlanc, with Kwang Hyun Kim going Saturday and Adam Wainwright pitching Sunday.
