After recalling Kodi Whitley on Thursday night, the St. Louis Cardinals are adding a second fresh arm to their bullpen prior to Friday night's series opener against the Pirates in Pittsburgh.

The team announced on Friday afternoon that it has recalled right-hander Jake Woodford from the alternate training site. Right-hander Daniel Ponce de Leon has been placed on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation in a move that is retroactive to April 29.

Woodford, 24, has a 4.50 ERA with five strikeouts, four walks and two hit batters in four innings of relief this season. Ponce de Leon, who began the season in the rotation, struggled out of the gates and was moved to the bullpen following his April 11 start against the Brewers. He has pitched just five times this season, going nine days between relief outings from April 19-28. He has a 8.71 ERA but has thrown three straight scoreless innings of relief over his last two appearances.
