Right-handed reliever Luis García, who spent the second half of the 2021 season with the St. Louis Cardinals, signed a two-year deal with the San Diego Padres on Wednesday.

García, 34, spent time with the Phillies, Angels and Rangers over his first eight major league seasons. He began the 2021 season in the Yankees organization but was released to pursue a major league opportunity on July 6. He signed with the Cardinals three days later and quickly became a key part of the St. Louis bullpen. After allowing earned runs in each of his first three appearances with the Cardinals, García did not allow another earned run to score until Sept. 19, good for a 23-game, 25.1-inning scoreless streak.

García finished the season with a 3.24 ERA, 34 strikeouts and eight walks in 33.1 innings. He also threw 1.2 scoreless frames in his first taste of postseason action as the Cardinals fell to the Dodgers in the NL wild card game.
