The Kansas City Royals closed out the Arizona portion of their preseason schedule with a prospect-loaded lineup and a 5-0 shutout loss to the Chicago Cubs.
The Cubs jumped out to a 5-0 lead by the fourth inning on home runs by Patrick Wisdom, Dansby Swanson and Cody Bellinger. It was all they needed for victory, backed by six scoreless innings from Justin Steele.
Royals starter Ryan Yarbrough tossed three innings and allowed the first two Cubs home runs. He allowed three earned runs on three hits, but struck out three without a walk.
Relief pitchers Carlos Hernández and Mike Mayers covered the final five frames. Mayers worked efficiently, only allowing one hit and striking out two.
Sunday proved to be a tough day for the Royals' bats. Only two runners made it past second base and the offense went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position. Young first baseman Nick Pratto picked up a hit to improve his spring average to .324.
The Royals fell to 19-12 in Cactus League action. Kansas City will play back-to-back exhibition games against the Texas Rangers on Monday and Tuesday at Globe Life Field before Opening Day on Thursday.
