The Kansas City Royals made a free agent signing shortly before Major League Baseball locked out its players on Wednesday night, inking right-hander Taylor Clarke to a one-year deal.
Clarke, 28, spent the last three seasons with the Diamondbacks but was non-tendered by Arizona on Tuesday. He pitched exclusively in relief in 2021, posting a 4.98 ERA with 39 strikeouts and 14 walks in 43.1 innings. With the Royals' abundance of starting pitching depth, he's likely to pitch out of the bullpen in Kansas City, but he does have substantial major league starting experience. He started 20 games from 2019-20 and has a 4.99 career ERA over 171.1 major league innings.
With the addition of Clarke, the Royals no longer have any vacancies on their 40-man roster.
