Veteran left-hander Amir Garrett will miss some time with a left elbow valgus extension overload.

The Kansas City Royals announced Friday that they've placed the 31-year-old reliever on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to May 29, and recalled right-hander Jackson Kowar from Triple-A Omaha.

While Garrett's command has eluded him at times, he's enjoyed a bounce-back season as far as run prevention is concerned. Garrett has a 3.00 ERA over 23 appearances and has stranded seven of eight inherited runners. He does have a .256 opponent batting average with 24 strikeouts and 17 walks over 21 innings.

This is the second big league stint of the season for Kowar, who struck out three and walked two over 2.1 scoreless, hitless innings of relief against the White Sox on May 19. The 2018 first-round pick has a 7.20 ERA and a 2.04 WHIP in 16 Triple-A appearances, including one start, this season. He has allowed opponents to bat .309 against him while striking out 30 and walking 21 in 25 innings.
